Children dying daily because of unsafe water supplies and poor sanitation and hygiene, UNICEF says

NEW YORK, 22 March 2013 - As the world celebrates World Water Day today, UNICEF urges governments, civil society and ordinary citizens to remember that behind the statistics are the faces of children.

Globally, an estimated 2,000 children under the age of five die every day from diarrhoeal diseases and of these some 1,800 deaths are linked to water, sanitation and hygiene.

Ankara, 8 March 2013 (UN Turkey) - Violence against women and girls is still a global epidemic, that inflicts all segments of societies and communities regardless of geography or economic develepment level. The shocking crimes of violence against women and girls come from around the world on almost a daily basis. What is worst is that in some cases the victims are punished for the crimes they fell prey for. All too often, perpetrators go unpunished while women and girls are afraid to speak out because of a culture of impunity.

UNHCR's Guterres: Syria refugees reach one million

UNAIDS and UNICEF welcome news of a baby born with HIV who now as a toddler appears "functionally cured" through treatment

And looks forward to further studies to see if findings can be replicated.

GENEVA, 4 March 2013 - The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and UNICEF welcome a new case study, which found a baby treated with antiretroviral drugs in the first 30 hours of life and who continued on HIV treatment for 18 months appeared to be functionally cured.
