Turkey completes polio vaccination campaign prompted by Syrian outbreak


OSMANİYE, Turkey – 2014 Turkey’s inoculation campaign to combat Syria’s polio outbreak has been successfully completed. Launched by the Turkish Republic’s Ministry of Health, in coordination with UNICEF, measures to prevent the spread of the disease to Turkey concluded after reaching 1.5 million children across the country.

UNICEF condemns killing of students in northeastern Nigeria

UNICEF calls for US$2.2 billion to help 59 million children in emergencies

GENEVA, 21 February 2014 – UNICEF appealed today for almost US$2.2 billion to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance in 2014 to 85 million people, including 59 million children, who face conflict, natural disasters and other complex emergencies in 50 countries.

A Syrian child in Ankara bearing the scar of war: Jumana

Syrian and Turkish children hand-in-hand with the footballers

GAZIANTEP, Turkey, February 2014 - “It is the first time in my life that I have watched a game in the stadium. I am excited and so happy.” These words belong to Usema Hamso  from Aleppo, who is 13 years old and studying at 8th grade in primary school. Together with ten other Syrian children now living in Nizip 2 camp, in Turkey’s Gaziantep province, he has been chosen to watch the Super League match between Gaziantepspor and Beşiktaş of Istanbul in the Şehit Kamil Ocak Stadium. Usema and his friends are not only here to watch the game; they also sent a message of peace to the whole world during the ceremony held before the kick-off, when they walked out onto the pitch hand-in-hand with Turkish children and the footballers of both teams.

Meaningful Support from Gaziantepspor and Besiktas Football Clubs to UNICEF

Footballers from Gaziantepspor and Besiktas Football Clubs will take to the field in the game on February 7, hand-in-hand with Syrian children staying in the camps.

UNICEF Turkey, Gaziantepspor and Besiktas Football Clubs together carry out a crucial social responsibility project organized for Syrian children. As part of this cooperation, in the game that will take place on February 7, Friday, at Gaziantep Şehit Kamil Ocak Stadium between Gaziantepspor and Besiktas Football Clubs, the footballers will enter to the football field hand-in-hand with Syrian children. The visiting team, Besiktas, will take to the football ground with the banner, “Syrian Children Need Your Support”.
