UNICEF Recalls Children's Rights to Life and Protection against All Forms of Violence

ANKARA, 15 January 2015- UNICEF is deeply concerned by the large number of reports of child deaths in the past month as a result of preventable incidents including incidents related to public demonstrations. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the recently deceased children.
Within this context, UNICEF would like to remind all concerned parties about a fundamental right which is enshrined in various human rights documents and particularly stressed in Article 6 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: “Every child has the inherent right to life”.

As a State Party to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Government of Turkey has also made a commitment to ‘take all appropriate legislative, administrative, social and educational measures to protect the child from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation’ (UN CRC art.19). In light of this principle, all administrative, law enforcement and judicial bodies, along with the community in general, have a joint responsibility to keep children away from violence and to protect their right to life. Actions and measures taken within a clear understanding of this joint responsibility will contribute to strengthening the culture of peace, protection and justice for all children in Turkey.

UNICEF sincerely hopes that Turkey will continue and enhance its efforts to end preventable child deaths, to raise awareness of children’s rights, and to combat all kinds of violence against children while ensuring prompt and effective investigations into all allegations of such crimes against children, as recommended in the Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.
