The First Children's Forum Ankara, 2000

We are child delegates drawn from the 81 provinces of Turkey. As is the case in many countries of the world, we are endeavouring to help ensure the promotion, expansion, and exercise of children’s rights in our country. We began our activities one year ago today. First, we formed our children’s commissions in all provinces under the guidance of the Social Services and Child Protection Agency in collaboration with UNICEF and the Ministries of National Education, the Interior, Health, and Labour. In each province, our friends of varying backgrounds became familiar with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and expressed their concerns and wishes on these commissions.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on the 20th of November 1989. Turkey signed the convention on the 14th of November 1990. The convention was ratified by the National Assembly on the 9th of December 1994, with reservations on articles 17, 29, and 30. With Law No. 4058 enacted on the 27th of January 1995, the Convention on the Rights of the Child was transformed into a national legal provision. The Social Services and Child Protection Agency (SHÇEK) was designated as the coordinating agency for the enforcement of the Convention in Turkey.
