CHILD LABOR AND RIGHTS WEBQUEST PROJECT (CLAR)

The CLAR- Child Labor and Rights Webquest Project is an online initiative involving 10 teams from 9 schools in Istanbul. 52 students and 15 teachers have been working on this project for the last 5 months in an effort to be a voice for child workers.

In the 2008-2009 school year, a group of 6 students from Terakki Foundation Schools won the second place in an international website competition organized by one of the world’s top technological companies. The students were able not only to generally improve their thinking and research skills, but also to create ideas and find solutions to the child labor issue.

The Terakki group decided on the CLAR Project to collaborate with other schools and to get their voices heard more in the community. Please click on the link below to visit the web site. http://www.clarproject.com/

 What is the CLAR Project?

Webquests are web-based research projects in which students analyze information available on the internet to come up with their own solutions to a given problem. The CLAR webquest has two phases. http://www.clarproject.com/process.html

In the first phase, the students researched the websites of international organizations, such as UNICEF, ILO and GLOBAL MARCH to find information related to the areas in which child laborers work and the statistics on and reasons for child labor.

In the second phase, with help from the links on the CLAR website, the teams analyzed international child labor campaigns from around the world. The focus was then given to the child labor issue in Turkey. Labor laws, organizations working on child labor, the media and the UN Global Compact were among the many topics. The students then sent a letter of appreciation to the major companies that signed the UN Global Compact in Turkey to show their awareness of the importance of this child labor policy.

At the end of the second phase, each team prepared an action plan, solution and campaign to address the problem of child labor and to present them at the seminar at Terakki Foundation Schools in Turkey.

At the end of the seminar the jury, a group of 10 students from participating schools, will choose the most applicable and practical campaign to carry out as a group. The CLAR team will then take new action to bring the campaign to life.

As a result of the project, awareness of the child labor issue will be increased.

The CLAR Team will also send the petition to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security on March 19th to ask them to organize more campaigns in Istanbul related to child workers and their families.
